College & Career Readiness

Grade 9 Checklist
  • Meet with your advisor to create a four-year plan.
  • Ask parents, friends, and mentors about their college experiences.
  • Explore career paths that interest you.
  • Research colleges that may be a good fit.
  • Volunteer in your community.
  • Join a club or after-school program.
  • Enroll in CTE, AP, or elective courses that align with your interests.
  • Discuss a financial plan for college, including scholarships, grants, part-time work, and savings. 
Grade 10 Checklist
  • Meet with your advisor to review your progress.
  • Continue researching colleges—take virtual or in-person tours.
  • Stay active in volunteering, clubs, and extracurriculars; track your involvement.
  • Consider CTE, AP, and Concurrent Enrollment (CE) courses.
  • Begin preparing for the ACT.
  • Register for and take the PSAT through your school or district.
  • Start a scholarship résumé; consider applying for one this year.
  • Continue developing your financial plan for college.
Grade 11 Checklist
  • Meet with your advisor to confirm you are on track for graduation.
  • Challenge yourself with CTE, AP, and CE courses.
  • Register for and take the ACT or SAT.
  • Choose teachers to ask for recommendation letters for scholarships.
  • Build your résumé and consider part-time or summer jobs to save for college.
  • Revisit potential career options or retake career interest assessments.
  • Connect with professionals in your field of interest to learn from their experiences.
  • Research college requirements and narrow your list of schools.
  • Apply for as many scholarships as possible; update and use your scholarship résumé. 
Grade 12 Checklist
  • Meet with your advisor to ensure you are on track for graduation.
  • Finalize which teachers will write your recommendation letters.
  • Apply to colleges in the fall—pay close attention to deadlines.
  • Review ACT/SAT score requirements; retake if needed for admissions or scholarships.
  • Submit the FAFSA as early as October (many scholarships require it).
  • Apply broadly for scholarships: check colleges, community, state, and national options.
  • Research student resources at each college (career centers, first-year programs, mentoring, etc.).
  • Request and send your final transcript to the college you choose (see BYU OHS policy page or Transcript Request Form).
