Are you interested in making BYU your high school and joining a graduating class? Semester Enrollment students follow a traditional August to May academic calendar year with six to seven assigned courses per semester. Students work with an academic advisor to choose either the Standard or Advanced diploma track and to develop a personalized graduation plan.
* Only available for grades 9–12
Semester students work with their School Counselor to develop a personalized graduation plan and semester class schedules for fall and spring. Semester courses follow an 18–week semester format and students complete six to seven courses per semester.
Semester courses offer engaging and interactive learning opportunities led and directed by certified teachers. Students benefit from increased structure, monitoring, and motivation, in our semester courses, which offer all the benefits of virtual learning with the addition of direct instruction and one-on-one mentoring. Live, teacher-led activities, engaging discussions with other students, and ongoing support from our Student Success Center are combined with self-guided coursework for the ideal blend of structure and flexibility.
As BYU Online High School student, you will be responsible for creating your daily/weekly schedule, rather than following a structured schedule established by BYU OHS. Each student is responsible for staying caught up with assignments and staying on-track to complete each course within its time limit. Students should be proactive in communicating with teachers and Academic Advisors when they have questions.
Developing this responsibility now will be excellent preparation for college and career.
Each 0.5 credit hour (one semester) course is designed to be completed in approximately 80–90 hours of study. A typical semester is 18 weeks long and the sample schedule below may serve as a guide to developing your own daily and weekly school schedule. Students may choose to accelerate or decelerate this pace depending on their schedule and learning needs.
Upon acceptance into BYU Online High School, students meet with an Academic Advisor to develop a personalized graduation plan. Graduation requirements include:
Acceptance of Transfer Credit Policy
BYU Online High School generally accepts domestic* transfer credits only if earned at institutions that are accredited by a national, regional, or state accrediting agency that is recognized by our accreditors.
All secondary education work (not U.S. accredited) done outside of the United States must be evaluated by an international credential evaluation agency. The evaluation is at the student’s expense unless a separate written equivalency assessment agreement is in place between BYU and the organization that referred the student to BYU Online High School. This includes work that may have been evaluated by a U.S. accredited institution and is reported on the transcript. BYU Online High School accepts evaluations by International Education Research Foundation (IERF) and SpanTran.
At this time, BYU Online High School does not accept homeschool secondary work for transfer credit.
*Domestic transfer credits are those earned in the United States or as credit at an educational institution that is accredited in the United States. Transfer credit is not granted for domestic secondary work for which credit has not been granted by an institution accredited in the United States and recognized by our accreditors. We do not accept international credit not assessed by IERF or an equivalent equivalency assessment provider, even if another accredited institution has accepted the credit.
