Semester Enrollment FAQs

Is there an age minimum to begin?

We recommend that students be at least 14 years old to enroll.

Is BYU Online High School accredited?

Yes, we are accredited by Cognia and the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS). Many BYU OHS courses are also approved by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Is free tutoring available?

Our team of experienced tutors is available to help your student with coursework for no additional cost. Learn more about the BYU Student Success Center.

Will a BYU high school diploma help me get into BYU?

There is currently no direct correlation, but our school counselor can help students apply.

My student is starting her last year of high school. Can she still transfer and earn a diploma?

BYU OHS accepts transfer credits earned or grade placement from institutions that are accredited by recognized national, regional, or state accrediting agencies. Students must complete a minimum of 25% of their credits through BYU Online High School to earn a BYU OHS diploma. These credits may be split between the junior and senior year. Students must be enrolled in the semester in which they intend to graduate.

Do I need to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to take a course?

No. Our online high school courses are secular in nature and open to everyone.

What about sports or other extracurriculars?

Both Semester and Flex students are considered full-time students of BYU Online High School. A local school would need to approve participation in activities at that school.

What will tuition cost?

Tuition for the 2024-2025 school year is $2,010 per semester ($4,020 per school year) for the Standard Diploma Track and $2,345 per semester ($4,690 per school year) for the Advanced Diploma Track. At this time scholarships are not available; however, you may apply for Financial Aid.

Is concurrent enrollment in university courses possible?

Yes. Concurrent enrollment courses are offered through BYU Online High School.

Can students graduate early?

Semester students are encouraged to stay on pace with their class; however, taking additional courses could result in early graduation.

Do Semester students have to start as freshmen?

No. Students can:

  1. start as a freshman and complete all four years.
  2. start in a local accredited school and transfer into a BYU OHS class, meeting requirements.
    OR
  3. start as a Flex student and later switch to Semester.
Does the Semester program adhere to a schedule?

Students complete six to seven courses during each of the two semesters that comprise a school year. Students will need to create and follow a schedule to make sure all lessons and assignments are completed on time and that the course is completed before the end of the semester. Each semester is 16 weeks long plus finals week. When making a schedule consider that students are expected to attend scheduled virtual live instructions (VLIs), correspond with administrators and teachers, and participate in school activities unless pre-approved alternative arrangements are made.

Is Financial Aid available?

Yes. After applying for Admissions, you may also apply for Financial Aid. See more information at https://hs.byu.edu/financial-assistance.

BYU OHS wants to offer our exceptional educational experiences to qualified students regardless of their financial circumstances. Financial assistance is available only to full-time students regardless of a student’s country of residence and financial assistance applications are evaluated independently of admission applications.

Financial assistance is applied towards the cost of tuition. We do not provide financial aid or loans for computers or other school-related materials.

Financial assistance applications are reviewed each week.
